Initiated in late 2007, Kill Effect was founded by London Ontario Guitarist/Vocalist Jason Watts; the band started playing around Ontario immediately. Throughout the next 2 years the band went on quite a journey of ups and downs, seeing various line-up changes, with one instance seeing Watts rebuilding the entire band from scratch. At that time, drummer Shawn Lockrey, formally of the Stratford based Punk Rock band “Run With Scissors”, took over on the drums.
The two started reworking the original music and writing new material while in the process of auditioning and adding a new bass player, which they did. After a short 6 month run of gigging which included making it to the final round of the Battle for Rockstock event, Kill Effect were once again without a bassist. However, very shortly afterwards in late 2010, K.E were joined by former guitarist and vocalist for “Fists of a Nation”, St. Mary’s native Steve Leslie, who filled the opening in Kill Effect. The band released a self produced, self titled demo in May of 2011 which compiled 10 original songs written and recorded throughout the previous years.
Now with the three piece Hard Rock outfit completed once again, it seems like the stars have aligned as Watts, Lockrey and Leslie have had a great run since forming which included headlining back to back summers at St. Mary’s Kinfest, where thousands attend every year as well as taking the main slot at the 2012 East London Canada Day Celebration at East Lions Park. All of this also culminated in March of 2013, with the release of Kill Effects self produced EP titled “STAND BY”, featuring 6 original songs written and collaborated by the band as a whole, producing heavy, yet hooky songs that are memorable and easy to sing along with. Also, Kill Effect have honed their stage show by adding a variety of covers ranging various genres and decades, from Neil Young, CCR and the Beatles, to Bush, Silverchair and Rage Against the Machine, even adding their own rendition of Rick Astleys “Never Gonna Give You Up”, which the band recorded and offered as a free download due to the popularity of their interpretation of the song.
Kill Effect can be described as the London based band that always seems to stick around despite never being thrust into the popular scene. The band that has plugged away since 2007, but only to come full circle in 2010, Kill Effect is known for their intense, energetic stage presence which has on many occasions, caused onstage parties to occur due to crowds getting so into the show they jump up with the band and rock out along side K.E.
At this point, there is no end in sight for K.E. Although the band may ease up on gigs here and there, or may even disappear for a few months all together, with the solid foundation that has been found with the current members, Kill Effect are a mainstay for awhile to come.
