Newport Electric is quickly becoming one of London’s emerging Indie acts. From Free Press articles, to gigs at local venues, to their “give back to the community” charity performances – the band is forging their own path amongst the pack of local acts.
I’ve seen the band numerous times and they always impressed me with their talent and songwriting abilities, but I recently had the pleasure of seeing them perform live at Donna Atkinson-Wilson’s “Raise Your Awareness 3” Charity benefit for Teen Suicide and the band has taken yet another step up the rung.
My dear friend Adam Plante (keys, vocals) who is one of London’s premier keyboard players and a record producer has been added to the band and his impact is significant.
This band has by natural order fallen into a skill that is a priority for any indie band – they write good songs and they deliver them well to their audience. John Couture and Steve Sinclair share the axe work but the “edgy” guitar leads seem to fall to Steve and he excels at it. John on the other hand is the guitar “foundation” and primarily is the lead vocalist of the band with a range that fits perfectly with the bands material. The two of them have that intangible connection that they complement each other entirely in both styles and stage sound.
Dusty MacMillan is that bass player that any drummer or band wants – he’s solid, plays to the song, sings and his bass rig delivers a solid bass sound that covers the bottom end – guys like him are always wanted for bands to be better.
Roger Osmond is a little misleading in his playing. To someone with no musical experience on an instrument, he just seems like the nice guy behind the kit who plays drums – but that is a misnomer. Roger does A LOT of tasty things within the structure of a Newport Electric original song, it might go un-noticed to a patron but to a musician it stands out like a church bell ringing at mid day. Not flashy, not bombastic – but very much calculated to the strength of the song and what is required. It’s a skill you cannot teach.
Newport Electric is a very, very good band and everything about this band is favorable and keeps getting better.
Check them out at a local venue or take them in at what I am sure will be all the festival gigs that will be coming their way based on their talent this coming summer.
You’ll be glad you did.
